If you have been spending hours on the treadmill trying to get in shape, you are not alone. For years, we have all been told that cardio is king. Run more. Burn more calories. Sweat harder. But here is the thing most people get wrong about fitness: cardio alone is not going to get you where you want to be. And the science is finally catching up to what we have seen in our gym for over a decade.
The Metabolism Problem
Here is what nobody tells you about spending 45 minutes on the elliptical three times a week. Your body adapts. Fast. What used to burn 400 calories eventually burns 250 because your body got efficient at it. That is literally what your body is designed to do. It is a survival machine, and it will find a way to do more with less energy every single time.
Strength training flips that script. When you build lean muscle, your body burns more calories at rest. Not just during the workout, but all day long. Every pound of muscle you add is working for you around the clock, whether you are sitting at your desk, sleeping, or playing with your kids. That is what we mean when we talk about changing your metabolism instead of just fighting against it.
What the Research Actually Says
A 2024 study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that adults who strength trained at least twice a week had a 20 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those who only did aerobic exercise. Another study out of the Mayo Clinic showed that resistance training was more effective than cardio at reducing visceral fat, which is the dangerous fat that wraps around your organs and drives chronic disease.
And it is not just about body composition. The American College of Sports Medicine now recommends strength training as a frontline intervention for managing type 2 diabetes, improving bone density, and reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. This is not gym bro science. This is mainstream medical guidance.
But What About Heart Health
This is where CrossFit really shines. You do not have to choose between strength and cardio because we do both. Every class blends resistance training with high-intensity conditioning. You are building muscle and improving your cardiovascular system in the same hour. That is what functional fitness actually means. Your heart rate is elevated, you are moving real weight, and you are training your body to handle whatever life throws at you.
We see it all the time at CrossFit Fig. Someone walks in thinking they need to lose 30 pounds on a treadmill. Three months later, they have not just lost the weight. They are deadlifting their body weight, running faster than they have in years, and their doctor is asking what changed because their bloodwork looks completely different.
The Longevity Piece
Dr. Peter Attia, one of the leading voices in longevity medicine right now, has been saying for years that muscle mass is the single best predictor of how well you will age. Not your mile time. Not your resting heart rate. Your ability to maintain and build muscle as you get older is what determines whether you are thriving at 70 or struggling to get off the couch.
That hits close to home for a lot of our members. We have people in their 50s and 60s at CrossFit Fig who are stronger now than they were at 30. They are picking up their grandkids without thinking about it. They are hiking, traveling, and living without limitations. That does not happen from walking on a treadmill.
So What Should You Actually Do
Look, we are not saying cardio is bad. It has its place. But if your entire fitness plan is built around burning calories on a machine, you are leaving a lot on the table. Strength training should be the foundation. Cardio should be the supplement, not the other way around.
At CrossFit Fig, every class is designed to build strength, improve conditioning, and keep you moving well for the long haul. You do not need a separate gym membership for cardio and another one for weights. You do not need to spend two hours a day working out. You need one hour of smart, coached, intentional training. That is what we do here.
